Fertility and Female Health

Chinese medicine has a unique way of understanding women’s health.

This unique understanding is of a special interest to me. I am a member of the Acupuncture Fertility Network (AFN), which is a professional special interest group of acupuncturists dedicated to supporting those with fertility issues.

According to Chinese medicine, the cycles of life explain women's development and the reason for various health conditions.

For example: The monthly cycle can explain problems related to menstruation and fertility. A seven year cycle has to do more with women development.

This understanding guides the practitioner to choose acupuncture points and herbal prescriptions that can support the individual and treat various conditions.

Modern research supports the effectiveness of acupuncture and herbal medicine for female health.

We treat:

Menstrual problems:
This includes excessive or reduced bleeding, missed periods, irregular periods or extremely painful periods. Or example: Herbal medicine has been shown to be effective in restoring the cycle after oral contraceptive use (pills) and in Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).

Infertility:
Both acupuncture and Chinese herbal remedies can enhance fertility. Both support the ovarian function in egg maturation and ovulation, reduce stress and increase blood circulation to the uterus.

Pregnancy problems:
Morning sickness often responds well to acupuncture. Other problems, such as constipation and pelvic or back pain may be treated. Recent studies showed acupuncture to be effective in reverting breech presentation and helping the cervix to ripen before birth.

Menopause:
According to Chinese medicine menopause is a natural process. Both acupuncture and herbal medicine can help women to overcome this crucial transition and ease some of the common symptoms associated with menopause such as insomnia, emotional distress and hot flashes.
